What makes a good weld?

Proper welding is key to the integrity of a product. A brittle or porous weld can present a serious safety concern for industrial applications, we have rigorous procedures in place to ensure all of our welds meet high-quality standards.

Here is our guide to the determining factors that will ensure a good weld;

 Ensure a clean surface

Metal surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned of all impurities such as water, oil, and flux before they are welded. Aluminium must have the outside layer of oxide removed before welding. If there are any impurities, they may lead to tiny holes in the weld that weaken the joint.

 Mind the gap

If the gap is too big, there is the possibility that the weld bead will burn away the edges of the two parts; if the gap is too small between thicker materials, the weld will not be adequate. To ensure the perfect weld, you must pay particular attention to the edge preparation and the required gap.

 Inspect the weld

Once a weld is already in place, it is essential to assess the quality; there are a couple of different ways to do this. The simplest way is to check it for cracks or inclusions in the weld. Welders use several non-destructive testing processes to inspect weld work, including liquid penetration and X-ray inspections.

 Know the best process

There are a few different types of weld processes, including MIG, TIG, Stick (MMA), and Flux-cored. Knowing when to use each technique is an essential factor in getting the perfect weld.

 Design

Designing the correct weld joint is essential for cost, strength, and visual appearance of the project, the welding engineer has several different options for design, selecting the proper joint and welding process is critical when designing a welded product.
